Quarterly Newsletter

Issue 2  Date: Oct. 2007

After a couple months off, the EDFAS Lone Star Chapter has begun the monthly meetings.  We hope you all have had an enjoyable summer with your families.  Your executive council has been busy these last couple of months making plans for the fall schedule and our 2008 Kick Off Party.  Information will be sent out as details become available.

We are in the planning stages for the Spring 2008 schedule.  One of our first agenda items is to elect a new executive council.  We are working on expanding our executive council in order to broaden our reach to the scientific community.  If you would like to be a part of this team, please let one of the council members know.

We also are requesting suggestions for speakers for the 2008 program.  Please send your suggestions to Robert Champaign         (r-champaign@raytheon.com) or Jodi Roepsch (j-roepsch1@raytheon.com).

As a reminder, the ISTFA conference will be held in November 4-8, in San Jose, CA.

August Meeting—We were honored to have Dr. Craig Hillman speak at the Aug. meeting.  The Aug meeting was joint meeting with the local IEEE society and was held at the University of Texas Dallas.  Dr. Hillman, CEO and Managing Partner for DfR Solutions spoke on the topic of “Understanding Failure and Root-Cuase Analysis in Pb-Free Electronics”.  The presentation covered an in-depth understanding of the failure mechanisms that are unique to Pb-free electronics and provided a comprehensive review of the tools and techniques to identify those mechanisms.  Mechanisms are addressed based upon the packaging level in which they are affiliated, including component packaging, discrete components, printed circuit board, and interconnects.  A physics of failure (PoF) based approach to the mechanisms are taken, with an outline of drivers of these mechanisms, including defect-driven, overstress, and wearout, and how an understanding of these stress-strength interactions can provide guidance on the appropriate corrective and preventative action.  A wide variety of case studies, including red phosphorus in epoxy encapsulants, creepage corrosion in immersion silver, and solder joint failures, are provided as valuable examples.

September MeetingBill Thompson, Chief Scientist for Carl Zeiss SMT Inc. presented the topic "The Helium Ion Microscope for FA Applications".  The presentation demonstrated advanced imaging capability which will prove to be a useful tool in failure analysis.  The meeting was held at the Holiday Inn Express in Plano.    A special thanks to our meeting sponsor Carl Zeiss SMT Inc. for providing food and drink for the meeting. The September meeting was well attended and again were able to provide WebEx capabilities for remote viewing of the presentation.

November MeetingThe Nov. 15 meeting will be a joint meeting with the local IEEE society and will begin at 6:00pm.  It will be held at the Holiday Inn Select in Richardson.  Dr Pecht is the founder and Director of the CALCE Electronics Products and Systems Center  (CALCE EPSC) at the University of Maryland.  Dr. Pecht has written many books on electronic products development, use and supply chain management as well as the Asian electronics industry.

Dr. Pecht will be speaking at the Nov. meeting on the topic of “China’s Electornics Industry, What are the Risks to US Companies and Consumers.”  This presentation will highlight China’s S&T policies and provide comparisons to the US.  China’s electronics industry and its success in obtaining and advancing technologies will then be discussed.  Also, key risks for US companies and consumers will be presented, including risks associated with supply-chain management, intellectual property, counterfeit electronics, and loss of technological dominance.
